HER STORY

Katniss was living feral until the middle of 2016. A herd of horses were living on mass acreage near an officer of Heart of Phoenix in Kentucky near Mumfordville. This herd has experienced tragedy after tragedy in an abandonment type of situation for many years. Foals were born and died without care, mares died in foal and none of the herd received handling, vet or farrier care. The herd continued to grow in size year after year as multiple colts and stallions were on the property. Finally, Morgan of RaiderHollow Farm, several friends and our officer, Suzanna Johnson, began taking action to geld the stallions and colts on the property and round up the horses, as they were able, and Katniss was one of the young horses to be rescued from the situation. The group immediately felt this gal was something special and extremely intelligent with a lot of promise. That all said, there was neither enough hours in the day for her to receive the handling she needed (and had never known before) at RaiderHollow, and she was transferred to Heart of Phoenix to be part of the Appalachian Trainer Face Off.

Coming into this competition, the mare had only had a short halter and leading lesson or two, nothing more, so she was quite the blank slate.

HER TRAINING

Trainer, Mike Hurst, has worked with this mare for around 50 days at this point, and he says, “She is an amazing horse,” well built with a kind eye and willing heart. Mike feels should could excel as a hunter, ranch or pleasure horse. Mike has had various people riding her since he started her undersaddle, and he has exposed her to trails, arena work and various obstacles!

He has this mare started with mounted shooting, as well. She is 100% accepting of gun fire. He describes her as a pleasure out on trails, and she is supple and willing in the arena. She has proven to be calm and steady with any level rider Mike has had on her so far, and overall, anyone could enjoy this girl who is certainly EASY on the eyes!
