Just Who DO you Call when you see a case of suspected animal neglect or cruelty?
Let me tell you, it is NOTHING Like Animal Planet’s Animal Cop show.
This is likely the second most frequently asked question we get after how to re-feed the starved horse.
1. Reasonable, calm Calls to your Local Sheriff or Animal Control Office through the county where the suspected neglect is taking place is the first line of action.
2. Encourage others who witness the situation to call the Sheriff or Animal Control as there is power in numbers and ask they do so in a rational manner.
3. While it varies state to state, I do not know a single state where the county animal control agency is not the link to action through the legal system (Animal control is frequently considered the local “Pound.”) Animal abuse and neglect is a crime.
4. NO private or non-profit rescue or national advocacy group has ANY legal authority to do ANYTHING to seize animals from private parties. The HSUS, the ASPCA, The Humane Society (which is just a random title of no particular group throw around a lot from the well intended) and local rescues CANNOT remove or investigate. We can assist when law enforcement reaches out to us.
5. If going to the proper legal authorities with a call or in person yields nothing, reaching out to the state HSUS director, Animal advocacy groups and rescues with documentation of the case, photos and all information can help. They can also call, offer assistance to law enforcement and animal control if a seizure is made, try to bring attention to a case if it is truly urgent and being ignored.
6. If all else fails, intelligent statements and well documented information sent to the local media can be helpful after you have exhausted other avenues.
7. Calls to your local state officials requesting pressure on law enforcement or animal control is another option after other options have been exhausted. This can include the County Commission and your State elected officials.
Anger and Hysteria does not help a situation. Requesting help from the wrong organizations wastes time.
Two horses are in need of rescue. This horses are located in Mason county/ Jackson county on rt 2 about 1.4 miles north of 87. You can see them from the road. Very sad situation. From what I have been told, people have turned them into the sheriffs department and human society and nothing is or has been done. This horses need help! Please let me know how I can help to get them rescued.

I am from Fayette county and I know these people who have a horse that is in need of being rescued. This horse has been tied to a pole by the neck there is no shelter, rarely gets fed and has stood in the same spot for awhile. The people who have him are not fit to keep this horse, they never walk the horse. They drink alot and Im afraid they will so something to the horse. I have called the Humane Society and the Sheriff of Fayette County and State police trying to get this horse out of there. The guy that goes and checks on them is from the area where the horse is and he does nothing because he knows them. Im asking for help in saving the horse. I can’t sleep and when this hot weather the horse suffers. Can you help the horse?? I don’t trust Fayette county any longer because they go out there and these people put on a show, if someone would just pop in they will see what I mean. Thank you

A small horse showed up at my elderly neighborhs house today and we can’t find the owner I would keep it myself but I think it needs medical attn. Her front two hooves have never been filed they look lik she has boots on and her right hip looks like there may be something going on with it. What should I do with her? Would it cost too much for me to try and get her medical attention on my own or can you guys help me with that she beautiful and so friendly. Please let me know my options. Thanks Cheryl Taylor. There is a small horse and a small donkey, on 342 Buffalo Creek Rd, In Wayne County WV, that have no shelter, And are in no matter what weather conditions, I went by there yesterday and there water was frozen and some one had thrown some pumpkins in the field .This place is off Rt 75, onto Buffalo creek rd just pass the Buffalo Elementary School on the right, I called the Humane society and they told me they don’t do that kind of thing. I have watched these animals for 3 yrs now and some time’s they tie the donkey to the fence where he can not eat or drink.Please help these poor animals.
